Balai Besar (GRAND AUDIENCE HALL)

Elaborate carvings, arched stairways and a high roof are among the striking attractions of this impressive wooden edifice. Built in 1735 by the 19th Sultan of Kedah, Balai Besar was part of a palace complex known as Istana Kota Star. The original building was restored after it suffered attacks by the Bugis armada in 1770 and the Siamese forces in 1821.
